Bcat Threads was shown in the San Diego Newspapers on April 3, 2008. You can still pick up a copy today. Look for the Beach and Bay Press, Peninsula Beacon News, La Jolla Village News, and The Downtown San Diego News. There is a four page fashion spread with Bcat items all over it. How exciting! You can also view it online if you go to www.sdnews.com, find the Downtown San Diego News and download the PDF. Pages 10-14 include pictures of models wearing clothes from the Brooke Catherine line as well as a 4 paragraph blurb about the boutique.
Bcat has added new designers to their on-line boutique. CG Designs come from a local SanDiego fashion designer who designs everyday wear, both fashion forward and comfortable for any occasion. Mazzy Star designs handcrafted jewelry pieces that complete any outfit. She can custom make any piece to make each individual person look more radiant than ever before.
We have added more new designers to our site. Chocolate Cherries is apparel for the fun and flirty. Wearing any of these designs makes you feel like a kid again. Comfortable and cute, how can you go wrong? Gem Designs are absolute must-have handbags. They are unique, durable, and practical for every day use. Check them out!
We have just added new accessories for your summer wardrobe. We have bright vibrant colors and new trends to get you ready for the sun and fun. We have handbags perfect for the beach, a day shopping, or out at night. There is something for everyone at a great price.
We will be in the Infield Pavilion on June 15 with a Bcat Threads booth. Here, we will have models showing off some of our designs and be selling our clothing at a fraction of what they retail at. There will be wine tasting close by, along with Hollistic Healing, Palm Reading, and fun, fun, fun! Come by and say hi. If you mention that you've seen this article, we will give you an additional 10% off of your purchases on that day!
The video from our launch party last March is finally here. I am so excited. We haven't posted it yet because we need to make a few minor changes. I can't wait to share it with all of you!
We just made the switch last night. You can now order anything on BcatThreads.com with a credit card or with Paypal. In the past, we only allowed Paypal, but found that some people don't already have accounts and didn't want to sign up. This will make things easier for everyone to shop. And, our blogging system has changed, too. You can now leave comments or questions for all to see and for us to answer for you. Happy Shopping!
We have a student afrom Fashion Careers College, who is in fashion design, interning with us. She started yesterday and was of tremendous help. She has the ambition and drive to make it in the fashion world. Although, most students are eager to get their hands wet, and should be. It is great to share such an exciting interest with someone. And, I really like the idea of, you help me, and I will help you. That really is the key to making it in the world. Well, maybe not always, but it is helping me. This stage of Bcat Threads is so exciting for me. I love getting involved and it makes me so happy that this student wants to ride along with me.
On June 15, Bcat Threads had a booth at the San Diego County Fair, thanks to Karl Jaedtke from the Pacific Beach Town Council. Brooke Catherine and Jennafer Grace represented the team and showed San Diegans a taste of what our on-line boutique had to offer women and girls alike. It was a great success and an exciting day all around. James Norton, a San Diego photographer, also joined in the festivities with a team of people, to have a photo shoot with models ( Kat Dente and Jessica Dungans) wearing the Brooke Catherine line of clothes. I've seen the results and the pictures are going to be amazing. We haven't gotten them from the photographer yet, but the pictures will be posted soon.
We also had models helping with promoting the booth as they walked around the fair wearing our designs. Jennifer Sandrock and her roommate, Lubi, walked around handing out flyers and asking people if they were interested in signing up for our newsletter. To our suprise and not much later after they started, the Fair security put a stop to it. Apparently we were suppose to go through the fair marketing team. After trying to kick the girls out, I had to persuade the security that we really didn't know the steps that were suppose to be taken and promised that they would no longer promote our booth.
While Dana Nevins, my fiance and helper for the booth, manned the tables, Jennafer and I had a little photo shoot of our own. We used beach cruisers from Hot Rod Surf Shop, located in PB, as props for our pics. What you can't see by looking at the picture is that this beach cruiser had a purple velvet covered banana seat. Do you remember banana seats? They were popular when I was a child and now someone has brought them back and they look great.
Fashion Group International and the San Diego Focus group has made it possible to expose new and aspiring fashion designers to take part in their San Diego fashion week this year. This was a great opportunity for me (Brooke), so I participated and was so glad that I did. Our first step was to complete a mood board of our inspiration for the designs, sketch our ideas, and draw our flat illustrations to show the details of the peices. We were to create 2-3 peices, with one look. Immediately, my head was flooded with ideas. Since I am always inspired by color, I chose to go with the ideas of color I had in my head. I've liked the way that ivory and navy go together, so these were the colors I chose. From there I started to think about the things that I knew were that color. I immediately though of china. Yes, china, as in plates and bowls. My aunt collects china, which may be where I got the idea. Then, I started picturing highly fashionable women in the 30's and 40's. Soon, I started looking for pictures and ideas and came up with my design. I sent in my mood board, sketches, and flats to the board of judges and was passed on to the second level.
The second level was to actually create the peices and bring them to a panel of three judges, where we would get 5 minutes to present our boards and our peices. I anxiously got ready, put my designs on a dress form and soon it was my turn to explain what the judges had in front of them. I was so excited about my presentation that, miraculously, it went smoothly and the judges seemed to like what they saw. Now I will await the official email to see if I make it the final round, which put my designs on display during SD Fashion week.
Below is a picture of Judy Thacker and I putting my designs on the dress form before I presented to the judges.

As of June 25, Lily Grace Boutique is now carrying the Brooke Catherine line from Bcat Threads. For those of you who live in the San Diego area, you need to check out this boutique.
It is located at: 949 Turqoise St., San Diego, Ca 92109 for those of you wondering, it is located in north Pacific Beach.
The owner opened this boutique in 2003 to give people the neighborhood feel for comfortable shopping. She carries unique items that you won't find in any other boutique. She has a love for art and fashion, which you will get the feeling of once you walk into her store. So, stop by and check it out, and don't forget to ask for Bcat Threads!
I found out last Friday that I made it to the final round for the Passport to Style contest, put on by Fashion Group International. I was so excited to hear the great news, but know that there is a lot of work to come ahead. For the final round, we will showcase one of our designs in the window of a boutique that we are assigned. I believe it will be displayed the entire week of San Diego Fashion Week, which is September 5-13. We will also be showing a collection of 3-4 looks on the runway during the Fashion Week's Fashion Show. This is so exciting to think about. I need to give this my all. The exposure will be so beneficial.
We were also required to set up an account with Stylexplorers.com, for those of you who aren't familiar, you should check it out. It is a virtual lifestyle magazine that launched this last march. It is a unique idea that keeps everyone linked together and discovering interesting things around the globe. It is growing immensley, which is a great reason to hop on board now.
I will keep you posted with the latest events happening for Passport to Style.
I have finished my costume for "The Art of Fashion" event that will be held at the Timkem Museum on August 9th. I am excited with the way that it turned out because I think I really captured what the painting shows. I was assigned the lady in brown, which you will be able to tell by looking at the painting and comparing it to my design.

I will post more details about the event when I get more information. Thanks for checking it out!!

I just came across someone that I wanted to share with you. I met this woman at a fashion mixer that I attend monthly. We met a few months back and now she is one of those pleasant suprises that I run into every few meetings. She is an artist who is now interested in creating textiles. Basically, transforming her art into fabric, so then someone like me can transform her fabric into art all over again. She just put up a blog page where she showcases some of her work. She recently sent me a link and I am really excited about it. I love her style and think its close to my own style. I can see us collaborating in the future to create some amazing peices. Check out her link: http://www.mawinkleadesign.blogspot.com/

There was an art exhibit/fashion show last night at Bar Basic. There were so many things to look at, it would have been impossible to be bored. There was were artists painting, body art, jewelry, great music, a fun crowd, and of course a fabulous fashion show. The FGI Focus group styled the show using some of the hottest models that SanDiego has to offer. They used a select few fashion designers who are involved in the Passport to Style event taken place the week of September 5-14, 2008. I was one of the designers who was showcased for the event. I got to meet other talented designers and see their own unique and very creative styles.
And, for all you out there who are in support of local artists and designers, I need your help. The Passport to Style event is a contest for lots of scholarship money and exposure. The designer wins based on how many people vote for their designs during the fashion week. Starting on September 5, stop by Kate Ross Boutique in North Park, buy your passport, and vote for me!! Please see the flyers below for details and please feel free to contact me with any questions, concerns, or comments. email: brooke@bcatthreads.com
One of the fashion designers, Isha B of "Chocolate Cherries" has her own website showcasing her portfolio of work she has done. It is a fun site to visit, with a lot of pictures. It is easy to navigate and gives a very professional feel. Check it out for yourself to see her talent. www.isha-b.com
Now is your chance to vote for Brooke Catherine Designs to win the Passport to Style competition. Everything is out of my hands now, except my votes.
Go to Kate Ross Boutique, in North Park and ask for your passport to style.

The Passport to Style Event is finally over and I am happy to announce that I came in 2nd place for the competition. There were many talented designers who were competing and the fashion show was so amazing to watch. There was a huge variety of looks and styles and not just on the catwalk either. We had people of all ages and backgrounds come to the event to watch the beautiful models at work. The third place designer was Angela Saint Laurent who had a variety of flowy, feminine dresses with beautiful prints. The first place designer was Courtney Little, who used the most beautiful colors that fit well with the fall season to come. She added personal accessories like handbags, broaches, and even crocheted hats, in which she made all of herself. In the end, I am very happy with the results and think that most everyone deserved to win. Every designer showed a great example for San Diego fashion designers. Check out the photo gallery for some of the pictures (I will keep them updated as I get them to me).
Check it out! Riviera Magazine of San Diego is the one stop magazine for fashion, luxury, travel, and food. For their October issue, they found 3 local artists with talent that they wanted to share with the city. Take a look at the article they wrote about me! Check out the link and go to page 38 for the article about me!
If you aren't looking for it, you might not see it, but this boutique is the place to shop. The owner, Christine, mixes vintage with new, women's and men's, with a store layout perfect for everyone. and, when I say perfect for everyone, I am talking about how I walk in with my fiance, who hates shopping, so he plops down on the couch, which is placed right in the middle of the store. When shopping here, it is all about the experience. You will find things you've never seen before, and the customer service is top notch. You are greeted with a smile and a helping hand. Don't hesitate to ask for an opinion either. Christine, who you will see in there on most days enjoys styling and put a complete look together. She has a passion for art, music, and style, and can bring any outfit to life. This boutique is located in the University Heights area in San Diego, but you can also check out their website. Its a boutique that every fashionista can appreciate. :)

Every once in a while our happy customers will send us an email or a picture of themselves wearing our designs. It always makes me happy and excited about putting a smile on someone else's face when they wear my designs. This picture was sent by the mother of the girl wearing my suspender skirt to a poetry reading. The mother wanted to buy something special for her daughter's birthday and asked me for suggestions. Thank you, LuAnn for supporting me in this wonderful world of fashion. :)

I, Brooke, launched my summer line this last Saturday and it was a great success. It was a beautiful day and there was a lot of ambitious help for the customers who paid a visit. I sold samples at a next to nothing price, past designs at a fraction of the original price, and sold my new, one-of-a-kind summer line. Don't worry, there are still some in stock. If you wish to take a look, don't hesitate to check out the website and inquire about other colors or fabrics if something is sold out, or go to Christie's Boutique to try the looks on.
We are back to the blog, after a long hiatus. As the owner and designer for Bcat Threads, I failed to do my job as a blogger is the last couple months, but with good reason. I got married on August 8th to my wonderful husband. And while that in itself seems to be a big deal, I also took on the duty of planning the whole wedding and not only designing and making my own wedding dress, but also the flower girl's (who matched my own) and my mother's dress. Needless to say, the business had to take second to my wedding day. But, now I am back and promise to never let you down again.
To get back into the fashion world, I kick started the upcoming season by attending a FOCUS fashion mixer at Christie's Boutique on August 25th. For someone who owns a small business and loves fashion, this is a beneficial mixer to attend. There are people of all different fields of fashion who get together to give and receive information to each other to help one another grow. It usually starts off with mingling amongst your peers, then someone in the field will talk about their experience and how they got to where they are now. Our speaker at the last mixer was Matt Schultz of Shultz American Original.
As explained on our fashion meetup website, which you are all free to join (http://meetup.com/sdfashion/calendar/10772113/):
About Schultz American Original:
Initially inspired by the Southern California surf scene, Schultz American Original has evolved into a brand that embodies freedom, individuality, and exploration. Comfort and style drive our designs in an ongoing mission to bring our customers all that is fresh. Express your unique style wearing Schultz American Original threads walking amidst the throngs of backpackers in Bangkok, Thailand, doing a morning surf check in Playa Hermosa, Costa Rica, or just rolling with the crew into your hippest local dive. Have a voice. Make a statement. Live your life. Learn more at www.SchultzClothing.com
When you start to attend more meetings, you begin to see familiar faces and not only make business connections, but relationships and friendships with people of the same interest. You encourage each other to do well and become successful within yourself. And, I encourage you to become a part of fashion meetup. There are groups in all cities nation wide, and there is always one ready to open its arms to you. All you need is an interest in fashion.

One of the newest fashion trends trickling from spring into the fall/winter season is the accentuated shoulder. Think shoulder pads! Thats right, power dressing in the 80's has come back and seen on all runways. The bigger and bolder, the better! The puffed sleeve matched with the 80's mini dress makes for the absolute perfect duo. And, the best part is that this is a great staple item that can be layered with leggings and high waisted belts. Try it out for yourself...you feel confidant, collected, and oh so sassy. Dress below can be purchased on our website at: http://bcatthreads.com/i-1554472-one-shoulder-ribbed-navy-mini.html And, the best part is, you can create your own look by inquiring about a color that you look best in, and get a custom size for your perfect fit!

After meeting at a fashion industry mixer, Elle Leary (http://elleleary.com/) contacted me about working together for a photo shoot. She wanted to use some of my designs, and work with her own photographer and models to create a vision she had in mind. I think you will all agree that her vision was well thought out and presented beautifully. She captures the natural beauty of the models and their surroundings. You see each photo as a work of art capturing the nature of fashion. You can see more photos in our photo gallery (http://bcatthreads.com/g-1136-new-photo-shoot.html).

After reading a blog from my friend, Elizabeth Leffler-Agia for San Diego Magazine , I thought to myself that I had to share this amazing idea with you. Bagonia Bags , an eco-friendly, multi-functional handbag line has come up with a marvelous idea for our bicycle traveling people. They created a whole line of beautifully made handbags that not only have several compartments and a secret stash of 3 reusable shopping bags, but it also has the buillt in ability to connect to the handlebars of a bicycle. With a lot of people turning from driving car to riding bikes saving on money and protecting our environment, these bags make for a fashion statement, as well as showing your support to protect the environment as well. And, if the price is a concern of yours, please keep in mind that these bags are made in the U.S., supporting our local manufacturers and factory workers. This is a small business with a big cause and you won't be disappointed if you buy yours today.
As a fashion designer living in San Diego, I run into a lot of people that don’t really understand the concept of fashion, or what exactly a fashion designer does. I am often mistaken as a seamstress or alterations. Now, I may be capable of sewing and making alterations, but that is not who I am. I feel the need for this blog because I’ve had it up to my ears in explaining myself away from a seamstress and trying to open people’s eyes up to the idea that design is an art and not a trade. Being a small business owner of my own line of fashion, my job duties are definitely different than world known designers. I want to walk you through the process I take as a designer. In the blogs to follow, I will tell about my process. I look forward to hearing comments and questions from my readers.

The first step in the process of fashion design is drawing inspiration from life. What “drawing inspiration” means is to use things in your surroundings to give you ideas of how to create a design. Whatever you see or do may trigger an idea, so paying more attention to what is around you is always beneficial. When you find the right inspiration, it gives you an amazing feeling of accomplishment. This is the most crucial part of creating the right design, so it should never be taken lightly. Take as much time as you need and take it all in. The best advice I can give when looking for inspiration is: Always carry a camera with you. I keep a small digital camera in my purse at all times. It’s kind of attached to my wallet—a must have at all times.
To find the right inspiration:
*I often look through many fashion magazines (Vogue, Elle, W, etc.). I am usually looking for season trends, taking a special eye to colors and shapes. Rip out those pages in the magazines, circle the look or inspirational part on the page, and don’t lose those pages!
*I travel whenever I can, taking a close look at culture, fashion, nature, and art. Take pictures of anything that you find interesting. With digital cameras, you don’t need to be selective, take pictures of everything. And, keep a journal. Write about your adventures, write about the behaviors of people, animals, plants, everything.
*I pay attention to interior design. I am always paying close attention to colors, furniture, design lines, art, structure, etc. I look through home magazines and rip out pages, I take mental notes of anything I see on TV that I like, I verbally discuss something I see in someone’s home or office, and I always take pictures when I have my camera.
*I try to always be aware of my surroundings. Everything from the monotony of everyday living, to trying something new….there is always an idea waiting to be discovered. Like I mentioned before, I always have a camera and am taking pictures of anything that looks interesting or appealing.
What if you can’t find the right inspiration?
On the flip side of finding the right inspiration, sometimes you try so hard to find that perfect idea, you become overwhelmed and discouraged. You hit a road block. This is a very normal process for artists of all kinds. Everyone has their own way of getting out of it. For me, I sometimes need to take the day off from designing and use my energy for something else completely different. Some times I even need to take multiple days off. I’ve learned the hard way that if I push myself to “just do something”, even if I don’t like the idea, I will have wasted a whole day trying too hard to design something I am not passionate about and it comes out looking like absolute crap. Allowing yourself to get to this point can create even more discouragement and leave you feeling like a loser, as it does for me. If there is any advice I could give when you hit a road block, it would be this: Give yourself the time you need. Don’t feel rushed. Transition your energy towards something that makes you feel good, and come back to design when you are ready and excited about it.

Model Courtney Davis collaborated with Stylist/Designer Jennafer Carter and photographer Garrett Lund to create an edgy photo shoot. Jennafer pulled designs from herself and me, from my Brooke Catherine line. The pictures turned out fabulous! You can check them out in our photo gallery. Some of the items you see in the pictures are also up for sale on our site in our Fall/Winter section.

Jennafer Grace, a local designer that we support at Bcat Threads has launched her own website. On her sight, she displays many photos of her latest designs and photo shoots. She has also included a blog where she talks about her adventures in the fashion industry, new trends, and all the wonderful people she works with in the industry. Jen is a good friend of mine and an accomplished designer in the San Diego fashion world. I praise her work and ethic and think you will all enjoy a little bit of Jennafer Grace designs in your life.
This blog is a continuance from Step 1: Inspiration. Once you find the inspiration you want for your design or collection, you want to start thinking about how it fits on the body. You want to think about the drape of fabric, the sillhouette, details, etc. The best way to give yourself the idea of how something will look before you actually make the design is by sketching out your ideas. Sketching allows you to change ideas, play with colors and fabrics, and show your ideas on paper before you cut into your fabric, or even go to find your fabric sometimes.
To begin sketching, you will want to use a croquis. You may have croquis of your own, or you can sometimes find free templates online. Once you find the ones you like, trace them out on paper. This will be the beginning of your sketch...Oh, and use pencil and have a good eraser.

Once you have the croquis traced, you want to start drawing out the lines of your design. Pay close attention to the alignment, especially when the croquis is posed--not facing straight on and symmetric. Play with your lines and ideas, then color according to your fabric, trying your best to replicate the look of the fabric. Make as many sketches as you have ideas. You want to remember all your ideas. Whether you decide to use them in your new design or not, you may dig them up later and like your idea again, and decide to use it later. This happens to me all the time.

Check out this video, which explains the process of sketching very well:
Check this out! Brooke Catherine designs were featured on US Trendy. A place where fashion designers and enthusiasts alike can share their portfolios and be rated on their designs. Today, my high waisted skirts were featured in the US Trendy Blog called This Just In! And was featured in another US Trendy Blog called A Classic Peice- The Trench.
This website also allows you to vote on designs for money and prizes. I have entered one of my peices for this week and I would love it if you would give me high ratings, as one my supporters :) Go to http://ustrendy.com/contest/ and find the One shoulder Navy dress with turquoise lace...the higher the ratings, the better my chances!
This blog has been a continuation of past blogs describing my process of fashion design. If you want to catch up, please start with Step 1: Inspiration, then following it is Step 2: Sketching.
Once we have sketched out our ideas for a design, we need to figure out which ones we would like to attempt to bring to life. We need to take in account the way that it would be constructed, how a person will put it on, and how we will create the first pattern. When we have decided on the design to attempt, we need to make a first pattern. A first pattern is like the rough draft. Its the first attempt to the real deal. There are two ways of creating a first pattern. One, we can make a flat pattern, like seen below:

Or we can drape our first pattern as seen in these pictures below: Pattern Draping is a procedure where you use muslin or a fabric similar to the one you want to use in your design and drape it on a dress form allowing it to lay in the way you want your design to look on the body. You use pins to place the fabric in the appropriate places, then marking all areas that follow your design.

For me, the best way to decide whether to use a flat pattern or drape for my own first pattern, I think about the design. If I have alot of details and need all correct placement, or want to design something very body concious (like a corset for instance), or want to have fabric that drapes on the body, I will drape my first pattern on the dress form. If I am designing something with minimal details, or a basic look, or something that doesn't need focus on fit, then I will use a flat pattern.
Once I have decided on how I will create my first pattern, I will do it accordingly. My first pattern is usually very rough, but gets the idea across. I don't spend quality time on perfecting my fit or placement of details, but want to get the general idea across. If I drape my first pattern, I will then lay it on a table and create a flat pattern from it.
After I have created a first pattern, I will then cut into a muslin or fabric that is similar to my design, but not the actual fabric. I am using this as a sample of my design. I will sew it up and put it on the dress form to see how it looks and how close it is to the design I want. From this sample, I am able to see changes that need to be made and I can mark them and change my pattern accordingly. This step is very crucial, you never want to cut into your real fabric from a first pattern. Even if it looks great, I want to make it perfect, so I will try to change at least a few things. And, almost always, my first sample never looks the way I want it to.
If you want more help on draping, check out these videos I found helpful:
The second one can be viewed here.
The third can be viewed here.
For Flat Patternmaking, I use a book called Patternmaking for Fashion Design by Helen Joseph-Armstrong. I highly recommend it. It is easy to follow and covers many different types of designs and all kinds of garments. We were required to have this book when I was in school and I still use it now.
In the last month, I was introduced to an amazing team of people who have all collaborated to create photo shoots that allow everyone to show their talent and put it together. My friend, and fellow designer, Jennafer, introduced me to Minh and Rochelle Huynh in the beginning of October and asked if I wanted to be part of the team. After seeing Minh's photography work and Rochelle's hair and makeup work, I couldn't pass on the opportunity. Together, they find models, organize shoots and Rochelle begins her work, making there face come to life with bold colors and beautiful hair. Jennafer and I compile a collection of our designs to dress the model, then Minh begins his work with the camera. In the end, the photos turn out to be so amazing. Thank you to all who have been involved. This is a picture from the first shoot. I will be posting more pics as they come my way and compiling them in our photo gallery with Mahal Style.

After receiving yet another amazing photo from Minh and Rochelle Huyn, I had to blog about it. Why? Because there is so much fun going into this shot. A lot of women look at button up shirts as something people wear in an office atmosphere. As you can see in my design, it can look hot anywhere. Match it with a high waisted skirt for a bold look, not necessarily for the 9-5ers only. At the same time, if you are looking to spice up your work wardrobe, this would be a great addition. The lace adds plenty of drama for all who attract it!
The other fun thing I like about this shot is that not only does it do my blouse design justice, but I collaborated with Jennafer Grace for this look. We added her high waisted knit leopard skirt to show how great it can be to mix and match designs, colors, and patterns. Who knew that lace and leopard could look so good? Well, we found it did and couldn't wait to show this combination to you.
You can purchase the blouse at our website here.

Continuing from Step 1: Inspiration, Step 2: Sketch, and Step 3: First Pattern, the next thing you want to do is construct your first sample. This is a crucial step in adjusting any fit issues or seam placement. From your first pattern, you want to cut into fabric that will be similar to the actual fabric you want to use for your design, but do not use the real fabric. The first sample is never a final product. Use this to perfect your end result. When choosing a fabric to use for your first sample, make sure that it is the same weight as your real fabric and has the same texture, for the closer you are to the real fabric, the more you will know how it will fit when you are ready to use the real fabric.
Once you have cut all your peices with the sample fabric from your first pattern, sew them together. I always start with all peices to make the front, then the back, then sew the front to the back. When sewing my first sample, I leave my edges raw so that once I fit the peice, I can examine it and think more about how I want to finish the edges (like the hem, neckline, armholes, etc.). For the best results, I would also include a zipper (if you are using one for closure) in the sample, but instead of buttons, I will just use pins.

When everything is sewn, it is time to use a fit model to try on the sample. If you don't have a fit model (which is a person with similar measurements to your sample), then the next best thing is to use a dress form. Dress forms don't really do justice, though, for they are stiff and don't show the body movement of a live body. I use myself for a fit model, which works great for me.
As you look at your sample on the body, analyze the fit. Look at where the fabric pulls, or looks too loose. Look at the seam placements. Look at how it makes the body look overall. Compare it to your original idea and see where it is the same and where it is different. Mark areas you want to change, or pin areas you want to take in. Consider how you want your hem, and how you want to finish your edges. Then, play with the edges and attempt to finish them the way you have decided. Take as much from this sample as you can and find all the changes you want to make.

After finding all the changes, go back to your pattern and make the adjustments. Once your adjustments have been made, you move on to constructing a second pattern. Then make your adjustments to the pattern, and continue going through this process until you have reached your goal of seeing the design exactly the way you envisioned it.
Do not be discouraged if you make many samples before the real garment. If you want a perfect design, you will want to make all the changes. Sometimes the more practice you have, the more you understand your fit, and the less samples you will make. But, sometimes if you have a very complex design, or tricky fit ideas, it will take a while to master the look. I will never cut into the real fabric until my last sample looks just like I want it to. And, I've learned the hard way that you never want to jump from a sample, to making changes, then cutting into the real fabric without seeing a last sample that you are full satisfied with.
We have just added a new featured designer to our site. The line is named Radokri and I am very excited about it. She has versatile feather flowers that can be used for just about anything. When you add it to your wardrobe, it adds enough pizazz to be noticed and draw positive attention. The designer creates, by hand, a wonderful collaboration of feathers and jewels, attaching it to a clip, so you can use it anywhere. They look beautiful in your hair, or on a scarf, purse, necklace, or belt. The feathers create interesting textures and beautiful color. And, anyone can wear them!! There is one to fit everyone's personality type. To shop Radokri, go to our site. Happy Shopping!

Yet another one of my designs has been featured on US Trendy. I designed this dress for part of my fall collection. Hope you enjoy!!

A while back I told you all about a photo shoot I had been involved with Mahal Style. And, now I want to keep sharing the photos with you because I get so excited with the work that they do. Minh, the photographer, takes a little time here and there to Photoshop one picture every day or so, then tags me on Facebook when he has finished. So, its like my birthday every morning when I wake up and see that I've been tagged for another photo. This is the one that I got today.

This is step 5 in a 5 part series in how to create a design through a fashion designer's eyes. Step 1:Inspiration, Step 2: Sketch, Step 3: First Pattern, Step 4: First Sample
Your final step in the process is the most rewarding of all the steps because you get to see your final look. In this step you want to take your final pattern and use it to cut into your real fabrics. Cut all of your peices out first, then sew them together in the ways that you have decided through your samples. Make sure to sew on any buttons, zippers, hooks, etc. that are needed. Be sure to finish all your edges and your hem line.
Once you have completed the construction, have your fit model try it on for one last time to be sure that everything was assembled correctly. If and when everything looks good, then you have completed your design.
In order to show off your new design, it is important to work with a photographer to get good pictures of the design. If you ask around, sometimes somebody you know may know somebody who does photography. If not, there are many other ways to find them. You can use Model Mayhem (where you can find models and photographers), local fashion networking events, craigslist, etc.
And, once you have photos, put them everywhere. Use social networking sites, and/or your own website. The photos below are from the last three photo shoots I was a part of. If you click on a photo, it will bring you to the entire shoot.
I just received a new photo of the day from my friends, Minh and Rochelle Huynh today. They did all the styling and photography, Jennafer Grace and I added the clothes, and Santana Bomar worked her modelesque figure to create such beautiful pictures.

I was once again surprised by Minh and Rochelle Huynh this morning when they tagged me in another photo they released from a photo shoot we worked on a few weeks ago. I was excited to see these ones because it was the first time that I worked with them where they used a male model and that we used a different back drop. The location was so interesting, and so many places to shoot. Jennafer Grace took us to a warehouse she uses for some of her work, and these are the kind of pictures we got from it. Amazing! I can't say enough about how happy I am with the outcome. I can't wait to see the rest of them. Although you can't see my skirt too well in the picture, if interested, you can purchase it on the site. To view pictures from photo shoots in the past, check out our gallery.

I just received photos from a photo shoot that I took part in a little while back. Elle Leary, a makeup artist and stylist, asked if my designs could be worn for a photo shoot at the Gillespie Field airport. Of course, I didn't want to miss out on this opportunity. How cool is that? An airport photo shoot! Click on the link below to take you to the full gallery of shots from this day.

This last Thursday, December 3rd, I was asked to assist for a Junior League Fashion Show at Confidential, a nightclub in the Gaslamp District in San Diego. What Junior League does, according to their website is: " implement changes and improve conditions in almost every sector of our society. Currently we provide hundreds of thousands of volunteer hours every year to help improve children's health and nutrition in the San Diego area, but in our almost 80 year history we have contributed to many causes".
The women of the group asked stylist and Cecilia Boutique owner, Elizabeth Leffler-Agia, to create a part in the show by using some of her peices from the boutique. She pulled two peices of my line, Brooke Catherine, and also asked me to assist in the show. Of course, just like any other show, we were crammed in a back room with clothing flying everywhere, models moving quickly, and everyone doing their best to keep everything in order.
Once we dressed the models, they looked amazing. This picture below is three of the four of them before they made their appearance to the crowd. The girl furthest to the left is wearing a Brooke Catherine Denim High Waisted Skirt. The model furthest to the right is wearing Brooke Catherine's 80's Rocker Dress, which can be purchased at Cecilia Boutique.

This last Saturday, Bcat Threads had a booth at the All Things Royale Shopping Event, which was hosted at Voyeur in the Gaslamp District of San Diego. People were invited to walk around the club and peruse the different booths that were set up with holiday specials for everyone's shopping needs. There was clothing, accessories, eyebrow waxing, free massages, and much, much more. Our booth hosted designs from Brooke Catherine, Jennafer Grace, Chocolate Cherries, and Radokri.

Wow, what a fashion filled week. It has been exciting and fun and oh so interesting. The finale was Ruby Room on Saturday night watching Jennafer Grace put on an amazing fashion show. She was part of Fashion Whore, a promoting group that host fashion shows throughout San Diego. The energy level was high and the show was captivating. There were many different looks, which all looked fabulous on the runway. The models looked like they were really enjoying themselves and the crowd kept yelling for more. In the middle of the show, Jennafer had this big guy with dreadlocks and a one peice romper walk down the runway to model the costume Jennafer had made him for the fashion show's 70's theme. The male model made quite the entrance and the crowd went wild. They loved the bit of humor that was added to the show. It was amazing and fun and was the perfect end to my fashion filled week.

Minh of Mahal Style used his video skills to whip up this amazing video of Jennafer Grace's Fashion Show at Ruby Room for Fashion Whore last weekend. It gives you a wonderful glimpse of the entire night...Enjoy!

There is one hot trend this season that I can't get enough of. Think Metallics. Metallic skirts, leggings, mini dresses, anything metallic. There is so much to pick from and I love 'em all. It actually comes at a suprise to me, since a year ago I would've told you that I hate sequins and you'll never catch me wearing them. But, the look is different now. It has changed from dancewear to fashionwear.

There is no doubt that I will be wearing a metallic mini this New Year's Eve. Why not? Its an instant boost that anyone can pull off and look amazing doing it! This trend has also inspired me to create my own peice of metallic wear. This high waisted pencil skirt can be dressed up or dressed down. Wear it to work as an accent peice, or wear it out as the main look. It works! Of course pictures never do it justice, but TRUST ME this is a one-of-a-kind must have item for the season. :)
For one of your own, you can purchase this skirt on our website, or you can also try it on at Ceclia Boutique in Mission Hills, San Diego, Ca.

Last night was the Grand Opening of Cecilia Boutique. It was an event I had been looking forward to because I have been involved with the process of transforming the new look. Cecilia Boutique was once called Christie's Boutique but, after the new owner, Elizabeth, continued the business for a year, she changed the look and style to be more fitting to her own personal style. Her reveal for the new look came as a big San Diego event. She had a fashion show, which featured my holiday collection of shimmer and shine, sparkle and fun. There were gift baskets, discounted shopping, and many great giveaways. The models shown below did a great job on the runway, showing off some of my peices. The picture to the left is my Black Long Sleeved Blouse and Metallic Pencil Skirt. The picture to the right is my Black and White Shimmer Dress with Teal Ribbon

So the new season of Project Runway will be airing soon and I am excited for the countdown (you can see it below). It has recently been brought to my attention that a fellow graduate of Fashion Careers College had made it for the new season. Jesus Estrada was a student whom I remember starting school right as I was finishing. We had got a chance be involved with the same event, The Art of Fashion, just a year and a half ago.

When I met Jesus, I knew right away that he had BIG hopes and dreams for his future, and I knew that he would get right where he wanted to be. He is a talented designer, but he also has the charisma and attitude to make for a great TV personality. I remember when we were being filmed for San Diego Living about the Art of Fashion event, he breezed through his interview completely calm and collected. I, standing right next to him, had no idea what to say and was so nervous about being on film that I felt I sabotaged my own two minutes of fame. I kiddingly told him afterwards that because he did so well, he made me look horrible. Anyway, the next day was the event. We are all in the back room dressing our models, getting their hair and makeup done and in walks Jesus. You knew he was entering the room because he walked in with a complete entourage to help carry his design and all the accessories that came along with it. There were like five people who were all working for him (haha, pretty sure they were all related to him--but they made him look so celebrityesque, if thats a word). As I watched him, I remember thinking that he is going to make it just because he acted like he was already there :) .
So, as the new Project Runway season approaches, make sure to look out for Jesus Estrada and send him good vibes. Jesus, if you're out there listening, good luck!!
In the meantime, check out his audition with Tim Gunn!
As a fashion designer I work with many models, they all have a different look, style, and personality. Those three things combined is what makes their unique look noticeable. I have been honored to work with so many talented models on all levels of the modeling scope. Some are beginners, just learning the ropes, some are advanced and take their careers very seriously, and some just like to have fun. I recently worked with model, Kara Willingham, from San Diego with whom I was so very impressed with. She has a look that immediately says "top fashion". She is the sweetest girl ever and she really knows how to move in front of the camera. Watching Kara during this photo shoot made it look so effortless. I had to share this picture because as soon as I saw it I was so excited. This belongs on a billboard somewhere. What do you think? I hope you agree!

For more pictures from this shoot, please click here and I promise you won't be disappointed. In the picture above, Kara is wearing my Black High Waisted Pencil Skirt. This entire shoot was produced by an amazing team of people including Kara Willingham, Jennafer Grace, Nicholas Tibor, Minh and Rochelle Huynh (Mahal Style) and myself.
Take our survey about what type of woman you are and see how you compare to other Bcat Threads followers :)
As a designer, I get myself out there as much as I can. One way of doing so is participating in a website US Trendy. I usually read through their blogs for ideas, and sometimes come across an article about something I have designed. I found this article interesting, for they took a picture from my portfolio work and compared the picture to one of Lady Gaga. Read more from the article here. Who wouldn't like to be compared to the most daring fashionista in the celebrity world. I like the comparison and welcome it proudly. :)

See you there!
A few blogs ago, I wrote about a model that I had worked with who had done exceptional work; Kara Willingham. During the same day as the other pictures that were taken, we took some inside photos of her wearing an outfit designed by me. But, that isn't even the exciting part. Not only is she wearing my metallic pencil skirt and black blouse, but she is seen posing with my little Chihuahua, Rocky. You see, not only do I love fashion and everything it entails, but I also love my little dog, Rocky. Weighing in at 5 pounds, this little guy keeps me company all day while I am in my studio desiging, drawing, sewing, and blogging. And, now, he has participated by being in a photo shoot. If you don't have a dog, you may not understand the feeling of pride here, but thanks to the wonderful job of Mahal Style, Jennafer Grace, and Kara (the model), they sure made my little guy look like quite the stud muffin.

Project Runway's Season 7 has finally begun, so back on the couch I will be every Thursday night. Tonight was the introduction to the entire crew of new designers, and one of those new designers was Jesus Estrada (the one I'll be cheering on this season). It's too early in the game to know who really has talent and who doesn't, but I can tell you I'm already disappointed with the judges. If you've already seen it, then you know that Jesus was almost sent home tonight and while I know he didnt' deserve it, I also don't think he should've been put in the hot seat. Biased? Maybe, but I don't think so. Did you see that hideous plaid dress from the other guy (what was his name?--there's too many in the game right now to get all their names straight)? Hmm, I'm just not sure. Maybe two years ago I would've found that cute, but I am over plaid...who isn't? If you ask me, it should've went home. While I agree with some of the critiques the judge gave Christiane King the designer who went home tonight), I also agree with Christiane when she said that she didn't have the worse looking dress there. I agree!
(winner to the left, loser to the right)

Now, as far as talent went for the first fashion show, I'm happy with whom the judges chose as the winner. Emilio Sosa has a great sense of detail and you could see it in his dress. I loved the way he chose the colors of his fabrics and interchanged them between the top and skirt. I am also interested in watching Ping, for she is by far the most interesting. Not saying she is the most talented, but definetly thinks so far outside the box that it leaves you wondering where her mind has been. Hmm, will she survive round two?
My last comment is not about the designers or the show, but about Heidi Klum...is she really pregnant again? I could've swore she just had a baby. Wow! She must really love motherhood. How does she keep that model figure after having what seems like a new baby after every season of Project Runway? I just find it a bit amazing.
Click Here to tell us who your favorite designer is, we'll see how opinions change each week and I will announce the results every week as well.
The Golden Globes is always the hot spot to see the most popular celebrities and the hottest fashion. Of course, for me, its the fashion that I am most excited about. This year there was plenty of rain, testing to see who turned into pumpkins and who kept smiling through it all. It seemed like most everyone was tolerating the rain quite well, considering the gorgeous gowns, makeup, and hair so perfectly done for the event. So, who topped my list as the best dressed? I give the award to Zoe Saldana, of Avatar, for wearing the most gorgeous maroon colored ruffled Lois Vuitton gown. I loved the color, which was different than all the others that night, and the ruffles were perfect. I would love to wear this dress on the red carpet (well, if I looked like Zoe Saldana, this is).

This year, to my suprise, I was not very pleased with Julia Roberts look. I mean, she is always beautiful, and everyone looks good in black, but it was just too safe and frumpy for my taste. Granted the jeweled necklace was a great addition to it all, it still just wasn't enough for me. Of course, she always has the most gorgeous smile and great attitude that I've already almost forgot about what she wore... Ah! That must have been part of the plan.

Episode 2 has just been aired for Project Runway and its already getting a bit exciting and a little catty. Who was your favorite this week, tell us anonymously by clicking here. For the new challenge, the designers were brought to a farm where they found Tim Gunn and all the models who were dressed in potato sacks. They used the idea that if a woman if beautiful enough, she can get away with wearing a potato sack and still looking good. The challenge? To use potato sacks to make a dress that was tasteful enough that the model could wear it to an evening out.

It was pretty impressive to see what people could do with their potato sacks. Many of the designers chose to die their fabric to change the whole look of it. That was probably one of the best ideas, because the color of the fabric itself is so plain and doesn't look very good against skin tones. Unfortunetly, Jesus Estrada knew that the color was off and chose to cover it up by sewing ribbon onto the fabric so that the burlap was only used for the inside base of the dress, which almost cost him his life on Project Runway.
If you ask me, I think Amy had the best design, for she used the idea of the potato sack to the rawest of its element without losing the concept of cocktail dress attire. She hand died all the edges of her dress, which almost gave it a burnt edge look, which was very different and yet very beautiful. She was given much praise, but didn't win the challenge. Jay was the winner with a dress that really did look amazing and was very hard to believe that it was made of burlap, for it was black, with a feather-like skirt. I loved the dress and wouldn't wore it myself if given to me, but I feel like I've seen it before, so I didn't think it deserved the win.
Ping and Jesus barely slipped through, once again. Jesus, as I said, didn't do the challenge appropriately...but another thing that the judges are starting to realize is that Jesus's style is looking much more mature and somewhat costumey (if thats a word). Although I am still cheering him on, I am really hoping he steps it up a bit. And his color schemes are looking the same. Change it up, Jesus! Ping made something that should've never been shown on the runway. Fortunetly, by the time it made it to the runway, she already realized that it wasn't working. The models butt was completely exposed and nothing about it looked ravishing or stylish. But, despite it all, Jesus and Ping were not the ones who went home tonight, it was Pamela. Her dress wasn't that appealing, but I really did think she did a great job dying the fabric. I'm sure she will still have a great future.
What will happen next week? I am already dying to see. Ah, the suspense of reality TV challenges.
Another great model and another great photo shoot. We are starting to receive the pictures from a photo shoot we did right before the new year. The style team did such a fantastic job putting their ideas together and making the photos look simply splendid. Minh, the photographer also used his fabulous skills to add so much depth to the photos. I wish I could find the right words to describe them. They have a vintage touch with a lot of feeling and drama. Hmm, that doesn't do them justice...well, you can see for yourself and let me know what you think :) I love the rain in this picture, it looks like it is hitting so hard, but the model is just soaking it all in. And, I love how as the rain touches the model, it creates a beautiful glow. Click on the picture below to see more pictures from the shoot. As the week goes on, we will be adding more. Enjoy!

Last night's Project Runway gave us an idea of what the future holds for our contestants. The "partnered" challenge showed the best and worst of everyone. While Jonathon seemed to be a bit unimpressed with partnering with Mila, the duo hit it off soon after compiling ideas. Their relationship ended with the finale product of designs that won the competition (#6) My personal favorite was Jay and Maya, with their futurisitc dress, that was actually quite appealing, and their knock off of Ben and Janeane's which turned out better than the original and much cheaper. Well done, Jay and Maya.
As I had once predicted, Ping's artistic ways of working seemed to be a challenge to Jesse. Although, I feel like Jesse already started off with a bad attitude when Ping chose to work with him. It was as if he was saying "I'm not going to let this be a good experience. I already know I don't like Ping." Not a good approach, Jesse. But, now that Ping is eliminated, he may have found validation in his opinions. And, I do actually agree with what the judges decided. Jesse and Ping were not a good match. Where Jesse has a more structed style of design, Ping is very loose and flowy. When the two of them tried to combine those looks, they did a horrible job. Neither of them tried to understand the other, if they had, they could've really made a beautiful masterpeice.
I do want to give a shout out to Jesus and Amy. Jesus saved himself this time around with a beautiful lace dress and cropped coat. But, more than that I loved their interpretation of Ping and Jesse's design. I thought it looked gorgeous and so much more well put together than Ping and Jesse's actual design. They should've taken some lessons from Jesus and Amy. Maybe they woud've survived.

On this week's Project Runway, the theme was "Design Your Heart Out". Cambells Soup and the American Heart Association teamed up to host an event. The designers' models were women who have been affected by heart disease that would be attending the event. All the women had amazing stories about how they have been surviving their heart disease. All the designers were very moved by their stories, and suprisingly, there were no conflicts between the designers and their models. As you can see in the picture above, some designers nailed their look, and others just didn't quite get it. As the models walked down the runway, I graded each on my own personal taste and aesthetic.

For the first time yet, the judges and I have finally agreed on the winner of this challenge. I loved Amy's dress and I feel like she made all the right choices; Her design line was aesthetically pleasing. Her fabrics draped beautifully and her model looked just like she felt inside: Amazing!!
Unfortunetly, the judges also decided it was time for Jesus to leave. I was a bit suprised at the harshness of the judges and the consensus to send him home, but Jesus had been in the bottom 3 too many times. I agree that his taste was lacking, but I think there were others who were lacking more. I admire how Jesus held himself as he was auf'ed by Heidi and also how genuine he was through the show up until now. He was a polite and respectable guy with no drama and cattiness. While that makes for a good show, I think his great atitude is going to get him far in his future. Being that he is 21, he really has a whole lifetime to learn and grow. This isn't the end for Jesus Estrada.

It has taken me a bit to respond to Project Runways newest episodes, but now I am in full swing. I'm going to skip out on Episode 5 and move right on over to Episode 6. I loved the challenge because it was near and dear to my heart. The challenge was to design a look for a little girl. Then, while they began on the challenge, they were given another challenge. It was to create a cohesive look for an adult. How much fun!! While Jonathon was completely unimpressed with working with children, Seth Aaron knew exactly what to do. I was immediately excited with the idea because I had also just posted new items to my store which were exactly this...Check it out here to see my matching mother and daughter sets, they are adorable!
So, back to Project Runway. It was actually quite humorous to see the different responses to the idea of working with children. Anthony was cracking me up because he was trying so hard to be cordial, but he had no idea how to even talk to a little girl. Emilio was also having a hard time with this challenge. His mind did not want to even attempt to understand the style of a young girl. His dress reminded me of "Little House on the Prairie" in a bad way.
But, coming out on top was Seth Aaron who had a daughter of his own, so he understood that they like to be stylish to. I think he nailed this challenge tremendously. Hats off to you, Seth Aaron!!

I will be blogging about Episode 7 soon, but I haven't even seen it yet. Thank god for DVR. Maybe I'll get to that tonight.
I've been experimenting a bit on different ideas for design. Sometimes I get stuck in a bit of a funk, so I need to try something new. My newest idea has been to make little girl versions of my dresses. Thats right, matching mother and daughter dresses. I've googled the idea to see what else is out there and I couldn't believe how little there was. And, I know that all the mothers I know would have loved to find a fashionable dress that came with a matching one for their little daughters. The funnest part of having a girl is dressing her up! So, I began to make wrap dresses, for a mini-me for a little girl. Check out the picture below:
Wrap dresses are every woman's best friend. They fit so many body types and can be tightened or loosened as our waists tend to do through the different seasons and holidays. The wrap dress seen above also has pockets. I've been excited about adding pockets to my designs lately because I notice that every time I have tried something on lately, I want to put my hands in the pockets.
Wrap dresses are also a marvelous idea for little girls. We all know how quickly children grow, so these wrap dresses can last much longer than your average dress. The adjustable wrap straps grow with your little girl.
The best part about these dresses is that they are fashionable. They are current, stylish, feminine and work with so many different women. To buy your own, check them out here.
A while back, I worked on a photo shoot with my favorite team of professionals Mahal Style and Jennafer Grace. We created a few different looks, mixing my designs and Jennafer Grace's. We asked a good friend of mine, Jen, to model for us and also experimented with adding in a male model. Jen's fiance, Carlos, had been teasing me for the past few years, asking to keep him in mind if I ever needed a male model. I thought I would take him up on the offer and see what he could do. The dynamic of the two of them worked perfectly for the photo shoot that day and I couldn't be more impressed with the results.
We started the day with Jen posing in yoga wear by Jennafer Grace, which can be found on our website as well as in The Local Boutique. As the day went on, we continued to add more elements, until we ended the shoot with Jen wearing my Red Cocktail Dress, Carlos wearing a tuxedo, and the two of them wearing face masks. The look was very dramatic, dark, and lustful. As soon as I received the final photo from the shoot, I was in awe at the beauty. You can see the picture below.
